Woodlawn wins back-to-back Class 2A state baseball titles

The Woodlawn Bears completed a back-to-back state championship campaign Thursday with a 7-2 victory over Bigelow in the Class 2A State Baseball Championship game at Everett Field in Benton.

The Bears were led by right-handed pitcher Cale Edmonds, who pitched a complete game and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after only allowing seven hits in seven innings while striking out eight.

Bigelow jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, but the Bears battled back beginning with four runs in the first inning following a two-run triple by Owen Stover. Stover was hit in by Jaxon Case on a one-run single.

The Bears added three additional runs in the third inning off of a fielder’s choice by Dylan Butler, an overthrown on a pick–off attempt., and an RBI single by Jaydon Wimoth.

The Bears scored their 7 runs on five hits during the game.

The Woodlawn Bears have now won eight state championships under head coach Tommy Richardson. Richardson has led teams to state titles in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, and now 2022.

The Bears finish the 2022 season with a 27-6 overall record.
