The Arkansas Activities Association announced the selections for the Wendy’s Basketball High School Players of the Year Awards for the 2016-2017 school year.
Junior Christyn Williams of Central Arkansas Christian was selected as the Player of the Year for girls basketball, and Senior Marquis Eaton was selected as the Player of the Year for the boys.
This is the fourth year for the Wendy’s Player of the Year Awards. A total of 23 athletes will be selected from the sports of golf, tennis, volleyball, cross country, dance, cheer, football, swimming, wrestling, bowling, basketball, softball, baseball, soccer and track. Each winner will be recognized at the Wendy’s Day of Champions luncheon at the Holiday Inn Airport Conference Center in east Little Rock on Thursday, June 1, 2017.
Coaches and school administrators are eligible to make nominations for these awards throughout the school year.
Williams finished the year with many state and national awards. This season she averaged 26 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals a game while shooting 40 percent from the 3 point line. She made All-Conference, All-State and the All-State Tournament team.
Williams was named Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, while also being named Arkansas Player of the Year by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
Eaton led the Jonesboro Hurricane to a perfect 32-0 record in 2016-2017. He averaged over 12 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds a game. He was named to the 6A All-State Tournament Team, 3 time All-State selection and the MVP of the 2017 State Championship game.
Eaton has signed to play basketball at Arkansas State University next fall.
