By: Richard Hester
One Yellville-Summit student was killed and four others were injured this afternoon when the vehicle they were in wrecked on a gravel road near Yellville. Three of the students were members of the Yellville-Summit High School football team. Yellville-Summit Coach Calvin Mallett said Kymball Duffy, a junior offensive and defensive lineman, was killed in the accident which occurred shortly after school today. The other students, whose identities were not immediately available, were taken to area hospitals. Mallett said one was flown by Air Evac to St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield and the others were taken by ambulance to Baxter Regional Medical Center. No condition reports were available.
Mallett said Duffy was driving a vehicle carrying team members to his house for a pre-game meal when the vehicle topped a hill, went out of control and wrecked. He said all the occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Duffy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident is being investigated by the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
Yellville-Summit School District Superintendent Jack Leatherman said the Friday night football game between Yellville-Summit and Salem has been canceled. Also, all Yellville-Summit senior high jayvee and junior high jayvee games football games scheduled Monday have been canceled.
Mallett said as news of the accident spread about 700 people showed up at the school's football stadium at Yellville.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those effected.
