Red Wolves Hold First Spring Scrimmage

JONESBORO (4/7/10) - After waiting out a lengthy delay due to thunderstorms in the Jonesboro area, the Arkansas State football team was finally able to take the ASU Stadium field Wednesday night for its fifth spring practice, which concluded with the Red Wolves first scrimmage of their spring camp.
The Red Wolves practiced for over an hour before coming together for the scripted scrimmage that got a lot of players a high number of reps while working on different down-and-distance scenarios put in place by the coaching staff.

"We had to adjust our schedule because of the weather, but we're fortunate to have this turf where we can come out and practice in these conditions," said ASU head coach Steve Roberts. "I thought our players reacted well to the adjustments. We didn't start the way we needed to start, but picked it up and had some good things occur on both sides of the football."
After throwing three incompletions and an interception on his first four attempts, redshirt freshman quarterback Phillip Butterfield completed 12 of his next 13 passes for 101 yards during the scrimmage. The biggest offensive play came on a 34-yard pass completion from Butterfield to junior receiver Dwayne Frampton. ASU also got a 16-yard run by junior Jermaine Robertson, a 20-yard scramble by Butterfield and had five total rushes for at least 10 yards.
Defensively, the Red Wolves got an interception from sophomore linebacker Nick Nelms and recorded 10 tackles for loss, including five sacks. Dorvus Woods, Demario Davis, Darius Dunaway, LaAngelo Albright, Brandon Joiner and Amos Draper were all in on a tackle behind the line of scrimmage, while the five sacks came from Draper, Tim Pruitt, Woods, Joiner and Timothy Starson.
"We have a lot of things we've got to get cleaned up, but I liked the way we flew around and how physical we played on both sides of the football," said Roberts. "I am pleased with the effort and intensity, but we have to become more consistent."
ASU will hold its next practice Friday at 3:30 p.m.
