Freeze Leads Red Wolves Through First Spring Practice

JONESBORO, Ark. (3/11/11) - The Arkansas State football team opened its 2011 spring football camp Friday evening under the direction of first-year head coach Hugh Freeze, taking the field at ASU Stadium for the first of 15 practices to be held over the next five weeks.
Arkansas State returns 55 lettermen, including seven starters on offense and seven on defense from the 2010 campaign. Six all-conference players highlight the 2011 roster, including junior quarterback Ryan Aplin, senior wide receiver Dwayne Frampton, junior wide receiver Allen Muse, senior offensive lineman Tom Castilaw, senior linebacker Demario Davis and senior defensive lineman Dorvus Woods.

The Red Wolves went through a spirited, up-tempo practice in their first workout under Freeze, working on both team and individual drills, as well as special-teams work.
"I thought our effort was very good and that our attitude was great," said Freeze. "One of the main things we will coach out here is the pace we go. I thought for day one, with a new defensive system and a crazy pace that the effort was very good. Without pads on, it's hard to tell how good the execution was, but we will spend time in the film room early in the morning, then get out and clear up some of the mistakes tomorrow."
"I want to see a fanatical effort with great attitudes, and I want us to be consistent in those," added Freeze. "If we are coaching the effort and the kids are giving the effort consistently from practice one through practice 15, then we can correct the mistakes that we see on film. At the pace we will practice it is impossible to correct everything out here."
"I also want to see great competition at every spot," Freeze continued. "We created some of that with the kicking game and we need that to spur those guys on."
The Red Wolves will return to the field Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Arkansas State's 2011 football schedule features six home games, including matchups against Memphis and Central Arkansas, and a nationally-televised game against defending Sun Belt Conference champion Florida International.
