Butterfield Lays Rumors To Rest

From time to time in the football world, you begin to hear rumors of various things that are going on around certain programs and players, and it is up to the media to find out what the truth of the matter is.

Today, we have one of those situations, and it regards Arkansas State University quarterback Phillip Butterfield. Butterfield sat out on a red shirt for his freshman season after suffering a full meniscus tear.

Despite having the injury, the rumor floating around about Butterfield was nothing concerning his injury, but concerning the fact that red shirt freshman quarterback, Ryan Aplin was able to see playing time this year. The rumor was that Butterfield was looking at transferring due to this situation, as some believe Aplin is the favorite to be the starting quarterback for years to come.

Butterfield told ArkansasVarsity.com publisher Luke Matheson that the rumor is false.

"[There is no truth to the rumor] at all!" said Butterfield. "I don't know how anyone could ever think of me transferring because nothing like that has ever came out of my mouth. It is my goal to be one of the main guys if not the main guy to really raise this program up. It was my goal to come in and do that and it hasn't wavered one bit."

Butterfield also added that his knee is back to around 85%, and that he is ready to begin competing for the starting job, and will work hard in spring football in attempts to get the job.

He also wanted to thank all of the fans for the support he has gotten so far.

"I've gotten a lot of support [from the fans]." said Butterfield. "That's been really helpful. I also want them to know that I am staying positive. I will be back and ready to go for next season, and ready to fill whatever roll the team needs."
