Bryant 45 Benton 9
By: Luke Matheson
In a game which turned ugly very quickly (Not only was the score ugly, but so was the bench-clearing brawl.), the Bryant Hornets dominated their long time rival in the 2010 Salt Bowl.
Bryant struck first as Tanner Tolbert called his own number on a fake punt, scrambling 43 yards for the score. Another exciting play came with 6:34 remaining in the first half, as Blake Davidson connected with Sawyer Nichols for a 95-yard touchdown to give Bryant a 25-0 advantage.
With the exception of Lucas Haley's sack of Blake Davidson for a safety in the second quarter, Benton's lone score on the night would come after a Wallace Foote 10 yard run in the third quarter to give the Panther's their 9 points on the evening.
With the win, Bryant now holds a 9-2-1 advantage this decade over the the Panthers.
NWA Featured Recap
Bentonville 45 North Little Rock 0
By: Brandon Kirkpatrick
In what was billed as one of the top non-conference games in the state this season, the
Bentonville Tigers and Pearson Gean were too much for the North Little Rock Charging
Wildcats, putting the mercy rule into effect with over 9 minutes left in the third quarter. The Tigers, ranked 2nd in class 7A by Arkansas Varsity, relied on Gean's potent right arm and a running back by committee
Gean, Bentonville's senior quarterback, finished the night 12 of 14 for 181 yards and 1 touchdown. Gean also finished the night with 61 yards on the ground on only 8 carries. Backup quarterback Dallas Hardison, a junior, was also very impressive on the night, completing 3 of 5 passes for 66 yards.
Senior running back Garrett Kaufman was the Tiger's workhouse close the goal line, finishing the night with 45 yards on 12 carries and 3 touchdowns. Sophomore Tearris Wallace, the lightning to Kaufman's thunder, gained 47 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown, while junior Alberto Hernandez gained 32 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown. As a team, the Tiger gained
189 yards on the ground on 39 carries, five of the those carries resulting in a touchdown.
Gean's primary target on the night was senior wide receiver Austin Molitor, who caught 4 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Junior Mason Snow was effective as well, gaining 67 yards on just 3 catches, led by a 41 yard run after catching a bubble pass.
The Wildcats offense could not find much success, gaining just 152 total yards of offense and failing to enter Bentonville territory until halfway in the third quarter, never getting past the Tiger
38.
Charleston 41 Clarksville 27
By: Brandon Kirkpatrick
For three quarters Thursday night, the Clarksville Panthers were able to trade punches with the Charleston Tigers and trailed only 7 points heading into the 4th quarter Thursday night at the University
of Arkansas' Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Charleston physical running attack eventually got to them, however, and the Tigers pulled away in the 4th quarter for a 41-27 victory.
Returning All-State Tiger running back Ryan McDonald rushed for 163 yards and 3 touchdowns, while first year starter and junior quarterback Dustin Shelby added 111 yards and 3 touchdowns on the
ground and 113 yards through the air on just 8 attempts.
"We're in real good shape," Charleston head coach Doug Loughridge said after the game. "We knew
coming into this game that they had better numbers than us, and we have guys going both ways. Every one of our skill guys play offense and defense. We go into two-a-days like we're getting ready for cross country."
It showed late in the first half, as well as the fourth quarter, as Charleston put together a 13 play drive, scoring on a 8 yard scamper by Shelby with 52 seconds left in the half to take a 20-13 lead going into
the locker rooms. Charleston would fail to score on its first possession of the second half, but their physical nature would get to the Panthers as they reeled off six consecutive runs on their second drive
of the second half to take a 27-13 lead with 6:06 left in the third quarter.
Clarksville would respond with their best drive of their night, a 13 play drive covering 76 yards, aided by 20 yards in penalties by the Tigers. Facing a 4th and 1 from the Charleston 41 yard line early in the
drive, Panther quarterback Trey Shucker would convert on a quarterback keeper. Shucker would then find wide receiver Jordan Bateman in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown and the Panthers closed the gap to 27-20 with 21 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Tigers would quickly respond, traveling 66 yards in 6 plays, capped by a 9 yard run by Shelby and a good two point conversion to take a 35-20 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. A quick 3 and out by the Panthers gave the Tigers good field position at the Panthers 41 yard line and McDonald would score his third touchdown of the night on the sixth play on the drive on a 27 yard carry, giving the Tigers a 21 point lead with 6:30 left in the 4th.
Clarksville would couple together a last minute drive, as backup quarterback Andre Redman found Taylor Hart on 25 yard post route with a second left to finish the scoring at 41-27.
"Physically, they just wore us down in the second half," said Panther Head Coach Michael
Banning. "They got in there toe-to-toe and just took us down the field. We had some bright spots. We'll get it going. I feel good about some of the things in the ball game."
Clarksville's top prospect, Wesleigh Foster, was held quiet on the night by the Tigers, rushing 5 times for -1 yard and catching two passes for 16 yards. Charleston focused their defense on him early and
often, having McDonald shadow him all night long. Panther quarterback Trey Schucker finished the night 14 of 27 for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns.
