The dead period in Arkansas is now over, and several newsworthy items have taken place since just before, and over the holiday weekend.

First, Class 2A Hampton hired a new defensive coordinator and head baseball coach. Head coach Wes Ables hired Chris Morphis, who previously coached at Lake Village Lakeside and at a school in Texas, to fill the vacant positions.

Speaking of coaching moves, Mansfield has promoted Brandon Elmore to head coach. Elmore was previously an assistant for the Tigers, and was promoted after former head coach Jason Gill left to become the head junior high football coach at Class 5A Greenwood.

A pair of Arkansas athletes landed their first offers just before the holiday weekend. Fayetteville wide receiver Jordan Dennis landed his first offer, as Illinois State made the call, and Rogers defensive tackle Zane Bush picked up an offer from Northwestern State.

Dardanelle has picked up former Pulaski Robinson QB Kristian Thompson, after Thompson's family moved. Thompson started for Robinson last fall, in addition to playing in several 7-on-7's this summer. He was in practice with Dardanelle last week.

And sadly, we already have a potentially season ending injury to report. Mayflower safety Bradley Chambliss broke one of his legs in the Fountain Lake 7-on-7 after colliding with a receiver from Lake Hamilton during the Fountain Lake 7-on-7. Chambliss is a player that has stood out in the 7-on-7 circuit this summer, and one we had planned on watching this fall.

Speaking of the Fountain Lake 7-on-7, the Cobras won the event with a 29-23 victory in the championship game over Dierks.
