The 2013 Arkansas high school football season officially kicks off tonight with games at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, and Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.
Ashdown and number 7 ranked West Memphis will face off at War Memorial Stadium with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. The Blue Devils won last year's affair 41-17.
West Memphis has a chance to be a sleeper team in Class 7A this year. Coach Lanny Dauksh always fields quality players, and this year is no different. The Blue Devils will feature a solid running attack. The only question will be a young offensive line.
The Blue Devils have a solid defensive line and a good group of linebackers. The secondary is also young, but full of talent.
Ashdown has plenty of experience returning for them this year, as they feature eight returning starters on both sides of the football. The Panthers will be looking to get on the right track as they failed to make the playoffs last season.
This game should be a good one to watch if you are in the Central Arkansas area, and ArkansasVarsity.com predicts that West Memphis will win this game once again this year.
In Fayetteville, Shiloh Christian will take on Siloam Springs in game one of the 2013 Hootens Kickoff Classic. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Shiloh Christian enters the 2013 season ranked number eight in Class 5A. The Saints are looking to get back on track after missing the playoffs in the 2012 season, and they very well may have enough talent returning to do so as they feature eight returning starters on offense, and 10 returning starters on defense.
The Saints have plenty of experience in the trenches and at linebacker, but questions remain at quarterback, though talented senior Daniel Shimer should be able to accomplish the job at hand.
Siloam Springs made it to the playoffs in 2012, but lost in the first round. The Panthers will be looking to get on the right track, but don't quite have the experience coming back that the Saints do. The Panthers only have five returning starters on offense and four on defense.
The Panthers will be solid in the trenches and on special teams, but do not have a lot depth or of team speed. That could be an issue against the Saints.
ArkansasVarsity.com is predicting that Shiloh Christian will come out victorious in this match-up.
The final game of the evening is one that the entire state has their eyes on, as Class 4A number two ranked Warren takes on Class 7A number four ranked Fayetteville in the night cap of the Hootens Kickoff Classic. This game is slated to kick off immediately following the game between Shiloh Christian and Siloam Springs.
While the Purple Dogs are coming off back-to-back Class 7A state titles, they will only feature four returning starters on the offensive side of the football, while returning only three on the defensive side.
The Purple Dogs will be solid defensively at linebacker and in the secondary, but could have a few issues at quarterback and in the trenches.
Warren is loaded with talent this year, and will be a legitimate competitor for the Class 4A state title this year. They return a ton of talent this year, with 10 starters coming back on offense, and nine returning on defense.
Coach Bo Hembree's squad looked really good last season, until they ran into a buzz saw in the third round of the playoffs, as eventual Class 4A state champions Stuttgart ended their season.
As noted, the Lumberjacks have a ton of talent coming back, but they will be looking for some players to step up for them in the trenches. This game will be a very good test for a team that could win it all this year.
While this is a 4A vs. 7A match-up, this game very well could be a close one. While Warren has a ton of talent and Fayetteville is a young team, ArkansasVarsity.com believes that depth could play an issue, and is predicting Fayetteville to win tonight's game.
ArkansasVarsity.com will feature a line blog of tonight's games with the blog going live at approximately 5:25 p.m.
