Round one of the Arkansas High School football playoffs is now underway (for all classification's other than Class 3A), and we had some very good games across the Natural state to kickoff the playoff season. One of those games was in White Hall as the Bulldogs hosted the Alma Airedales in Class 5A playoff action.

The game went right down to the wire, and the Bulldogs had to fend off a two-point conversion attempt by the Airedales with less than 10 seconds to play in the game to keep the game going into overtime. White Hall sophomore Nathan Lee would be the man to make the play, as he stepped in front of a Austin McCourt pass, and knocked the ball down to seal the 28-26 victory at Bulldog Stadium.

The game started out slow, with both teams having several three and outs. The Bulldogs would strike first on their second possession of the second half, when star running back Larry Walls scored his first of three touchdowns from two yards out. The Bulldogs would miss the PAT, and go up 6-0 with 6:44 to play in the half.

After a fourth down stand, the Bulldogs would again take over, and go on a 10 play, 66 yard drive capped off by a nine yard touchdown run by Walls. A high snap would negate the point after attempt, and make the score 12-0.

Alma would not go down without a fight. The Airedales would receive the opening kickoff of the second half, and answered the call. An 11 play 65 yard drive would open the half, with the Airedales putting points on the board at the 8:21 mark of the third quarter on a eight yard pass from Austin McCourt to Isaac McCoy. The Airedales would convert the PAT, making the score 12-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Airedales were not finished though, as their defense would hold the Bulldogs to a three and out, then go on a 14 play 68 yard drive, capped off by a 8 yard McCoy touchdown run. With the added PAT, the Airedales would take a 14-12 lead wit 40.2 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs would answer right back, though, with a 8 play, 64 yard drive capped off by a two yard A.J. Richardson run. Walls would convert the two-point conversion, putting the Bulldogs ahead 20-14.

As the Airedales faced third-and-18 from their 38-yard line on their next possession, White Hall sophomore Nathan Lee would pick off a McCourt pass, and return it 43 yards to the nine yard line, setting up a six yard scamper two plays later by Walls for his third touchdown of the night. Walls would again get the call, and score on the two-point conversion.

The Airedales would come out swinging on their next possession, going on a 6 play 75 yard drive, capped off by a one yard plunge from Shawn Tabor. White Hall would block the PAT, making the score 28-20 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Alma would score one last time wit 10.9 seconds on the clock, but the two-point conversion was no good, giving the Bulldogs a 28-26 victory.

White Hall head coach Mike Vaughn was proud of his team following the game.

"Our seniors played their hearts out tonight." said Vaughn. "They, along with the rest of the team, stepped up and made plays when they had to, and that is what wins ballgames. We are in the playoffs now, and every team is good. Once you get to these playoffs, every game is tough. We knew how good they were on offense, but I thought our defense played super all night long, and that ultimately helped us get the win."

Alma head coach Todd Dilbeck also spoke about his teams performance following the game.

"We came back in the second half and stepped up and did a really great job." said Dilbeck "I thought in the first half we had a lot of mental errors. When you're first-and-15 on every series, it's hard to get out of that hole, and I think they came back in the second half and did a really great job. We had a big game out of Isaac McCoy, but here's the deal, you can't base your team off of one person. The mistakes killed us tonight."

White Hall running back Larry Walls spoke about his performance. Walls had 25 carries, 147 yards, 3 touchdowns, and a pair of two-point conversions.

"It feels really good to be a senior, and to come out and win in the playoffs." said Walls. "We have had two close games in a row now, but I think it shows that we have heart since we was able to hold on and win them. We play Camden Fairview next week now, and they are a really good team, so we are going to have to work hard this week and prepare for them, and go get us another win next week."

Walls is the ArkansasVarsity.com Player of the Game.

As stated, White Hall will travel this coming up week to face Camden Fairview.
