October 31, 2009 STAR CITY TROUNCES FORDYCE IN SWEET VENGEANCE AT HOMESTAR CITY ? Last year, Fordyce kept Star City out of the playoffs by beating the Bulldogs on a last-minute touchdown pass. This year, Star City’s defense and ground game made it to where the game wasn’t even close. The Bulldogs rushed for 277 yards and held the Redbugs to only 154 total yards as Star City remained one of the hottest teams in Southeast Arkansas and extracted some revenge with a 28-12 victory Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. The win secured a No. 2 seed in the playoffs out of the 8-4A Conference and put the Bulldogs in position for a share of the conference title after Hamburg upset Warren 7-6. Coaches don’t usually tinker with an offense that has scored 30 or more points in seven of its eight games. Or one that has helped a team to what will now most likely will be a first-round playoff game on its home field. But to start a game on a muddy field at Yellowjacket Stadium on Friday night, Watson Chapel coach George Shelton had a usual wide receiver lined up under center and the quarterback that had started every game this season lined up as one of three wishbone running backs. Playing on a muddy, slow surface at Beebe’s “Bro” Erwin Stadium, White Hall coach Mike Vaughn wasn’t sure if his team would be able to use its speed advantage over the more powerful Badgers rushing attack. Bulldog rushers Matt Taylor and A.J. Richardson made sure they did, as each ran for long touchdowns in the second quarter to secure a 41-20 victory over Beebe in a critical 5A-Southeast Conference showdown at Beebe. The Monticello Billies amassed over 350 yards on a sloppy Yarbrough Field surface en route to a 43-0 manhandling of the Crossett Eagles on Friday night. The Eagles were held to just 126 yards of offense and hurt their own cause by turning the ball over five times. The Lumberjacks were a two-touchdown favorite in the game. Warren’s opening possession began at their 43 after Hamburg’s offense failed to move the ball on the opening kickoff. On the first-down play, Lumberjack quarterback Hayden Smith passed to Allen Tatum for 24 yards to the Hamburg 28. Smith picked 5 yards, and Savion Gilbert added 10 more. Smith then gained 5 more yards, and after an offsides penalty against the Lumberjacks, Gilbert carried three times for 10 yards, scoring from the Hamburg 3. Miguel Sedeno’s kick attempt failed for a 6-0 Warren lead with 7:46 left in the first quarter. Read The Full Story From The Pine Bluff Commercial DUMAS BOBCATS BASH OWLS, 38-6 DUMAS ? Head coach Mark Courtney said after last week’s blowout victory at Fordyce that his Dumas Bobcats were “having fun” again. They had a lot of fun this Friday, too, whipping Desha County rival McGehee at Tidwell Field, 38-6, to improve to 4-2 in 8-4A Conference play and 7-2 overall with their fourth lopsided win in a row in the ancient series. Read The Full Story From The Jonesboro Sun Jonesboro nips Marion MARION ? Friday night’s short road trip to Marion severely tested the Jonesboro football team’s fortitude. Another round of rain reduced the field to a spongy mess, and two hours of football didn’t help matters. The Hurricane’s 4- and 5-wide receiver formations were replaced with snaps under center and handoffs to fullbacks. An offense used to big plays never gained more than 21 yards on any snap. Familiar penalties and dropped passes made untimely appearances. Read The Full Story From The Jonesboro Sun Blazers roll past Redskins POCAHONTAS ?
